Nightingales are famous for the power and beauty of their song and for singing right through the night.

This fascinating selection of nightingale recordings was made by Nick Penny in woods near Glapthorn and Southwick in Northamptonshire.

It starts with an evening chorus, then as night falls groups of nightingales and solo birds continue with a remarkable range of songs and calls.

Deep in the night their singing gradually slows down - the only other sounds are tawny owls and the barks of muntjac deer.

Just before dawn the pace quickens, and other birds and farm animals start to join in the background.

Then day breaks, and nightingales are once again singing in the full glory of a woodland dawn chorus.
